If you have been diagnosed with migraines or migraine headaches, you may wonder if there is anything you can do to help alleviate them. With our new botox treatment to help aid migraines, we can help improve your quality of life, all from our skin and laser clinic in Staffordshire.

What Is Botox® For Migraines?

Botox® for migraines is used as a preventative treatment in chronic migraine. Rather than stopping your migraines once they’ve started, Botox® for migraines aims to reduce the number of days on which you get headaches, improving your quality of life.

Doctors think Botox works for migraine headaches because it blocks neurotransmitters that carry pain signals from your brain. Botox is like a roadblock in that pathway, ultimately stopping the chemicals before they get to the nerve endings around your head and neck.

Our Step By Step Guide To Treatments

Step 1:
Consultation

Much like with every treatment at Harley Skin & Laser Clinic, the journey begins with your consultation. Starting a new course of Botox® for migraines is a big step, so it is important that our team has checked that this is a suitable treatment for you.

As an overall guide, we wouldn’t recommend our Botox treatment for migraines if:

  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant
  • You have an infection around or on the areas due to be injected
  • You have had a bad reaction to a botulinum toxin type A treatment in the past

During your consultation, we will discuss with you what our Botox migraine treatment involves, what to expect and any side effects.

Step 2:
During Your Treatment

This treatment consists of a set of injections that is carried out every 12 weeks. One of our practitioners will inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin type A into the muscles around your head, neck and shoulders. This treatment typically includes 31 injections and takes about 15 minutes.

If you are worried about your treatment, please speak to our team today and we can help answer any questions you may have.

Step 3:
After The Treatment

We would advise that after your treatment, you should continue to note down your migraines including:

  • How long your migraines last
  • How bad they are
  • How many times you have migraines each month

Be sure to follow the aftercare as advised by Harley Skin & Laser Clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

A diagnosis of chronic migraine usually means that you get headaches on 15 or more days every month for at least three months; and eight of those 15 days have migraine symptoms, including severe pain. It is estimated that about 1-2% of people worldwide suffer from chronic migraine.

If you suffer from chronic migraines, you’ll know that they’re more than just a headache. The pain of migraine can be severe, and you may notice that you’re excessively sensitive to light, loud sounds or smells and may feel nauseous or vomit during an attack. Frequent migraines can have a real effect on your life and what you can do.

As with any type of injection, you may experience some discomfort during your treatment session, but this shouldn’t last for long.

Botox injections for migraines are here to help improve your quality of life and help convert your migraines from chronic to episodic.

As protein is an active ingredient – the part of the medicine that does the work – and it is thought that Botox® helps migraines by blocking neurotransmitters that carry pain signals before they reach the nerve endings. This indirectly blocks the development of a migraine.
