What Are Spider Veins?

As we grow older, our skin changes. It loses elasticity, becomes drier, and generally looks less healthy. The latter problem is exacerbated by additional problems such as spider veins. These look a lot like varicose veins, but are smaller. They are usually purple or red, branching out from the main vein, causing a spider web effect.

What Are Spider Veins?

These are small purple or red veins, that are clustered together. Most commonly found on the calves, ankles and upper thighs. Spider veins can first become apparent at any age, but they generally become more pronounced as we begin to age.

How Are Spider Veins Caused?

There are a number of ways that spider veins can be caused. They can be hereditary or caused by a change in hormones, especially pregnancy. People who have either recently putting on a little weight, or are trying to lose weight as part of a diet, are also more likely to suffer from Spider veins. Lifestyle choices also have an effect on spider veins. For example, if your job requires long periods of inactivity and sitting, this can cause spider veins.

Can Spider Veins Be Treated?

Yes, spider veins can be treated very effectively. In the past, several treatments were available that would remove the veins over time, and there were additional treatments that would alleviate the pain the veins cause in the short-term. In recent years, modern therapies have made the treatment of spider veins almost instant.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

There are a number of different treatments that can be tried, to try and alleviate both the pain and the visible symptoms of spider veins, and these can include:

  • Support stockings – very effective in alleviating any pain, but does not tackle the visible symptoms.
  • Changes in lifestyle – switching your job to one that does not involve sitting down all day, and losing weight if you are obese are both of great help.
  • Sclerotherapy – a proven and effective procedure that will generally remove the spider veins within 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Endovenous laser treatment – a modern treatment, done under a local anaesthetic, that works very quickly in removing spider veins.
  • Radiofrequency occlusion – another modern treatment, easier to implement than laser treatment, occasionally performed under a local anaesthetic.

Which treatment is right for you will depend on many factors, such as how bad your spider veins are, and how quickly you want them gone.
