Often considered a relatively taboo personal problem, hyperhidrosis more commonly known as excessive sweating affects about 1% – 3% of the population. Those affected by the condition often find it interfering with their everyday lives which is why many opt for hyperhidrosis treatments.

What Is Hyperhidrosis & How Does It Affect People?
Any amount of sweating is the body’s natural mechanism to cool itself via your nervous system, automatically triggering your sweat glands when your body temperature rises. However when a person is afflicted with the most common form of hyperhidrosis known as “primary focal”, the nerves responsible for signalling the sweat glands become overactive, despite having no physical triggers this results in an excessive amount of sweating. Primarily affecting the palms and soles of the feet, this form of hyperhidrosis has no medical cause although it may have a hereditary component.

Secondary hyperhidrosis occurs due to the effects of other medical conditions, it is less common although can cause excessive sweating all over the body. Conditions such as the below may lead to excessive sweating:

  • Diabetes
  • Menopause hot flashes
  • Thyroid problems
  • Low blood sugar
  • Some types of cancer
  • Heart attack
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Infections

How Is Hyperhidrosis Diagnosed?

If you experience excessive sweating and believe you may be afflicted with hyperhidrosis, there are several ways this can be diagnosed. Usually done by a dermatologist through a physical exam, which includes looking closely at the areas of the body that sweat excessively while asking very specific questions so the dermatologist can understand why excessive sweating may be occurring. On some occasions medical testing may be required, this is known as the sweat test, where a powder is applied to the skin that turns purple when wet so the affected areas can be specified to conclude the amount of sweat produced.

Before coming to us here at Harley Skin & Laser Clinic in Stafforshire, some clients want advice on checking themselves for excessive sweating. Although we advise coming in to see our aesthetic practitioners a few checks can be done such as; recording how often you change your clothing and find yourself needing to wash areas of your body that do sweat profusely, finding you get infections or irritated skin as a result of the excessive perspiration or that due to the excess in sweat you notice damage done to paperwork or electronic devices.

If you do find yourself affected by the above, we advise coming for a consultation here at Harley Skin & Laser Clinic in Newcastle-under-Lyme so the first steps can be taken to move forward with the hyperhidrosis treatment and you can start to feel like a new you.

What Can You Expect During Our Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Step 1:
Consultation

As with all of our treatments, here at Harley Skin & Laser Clinic, a consultation always comes first ensuring your health and wellbeing are our top priority. During the consultation, our experienced aesthetic practitioners will talk through your medical history with you ensuring there are no contradictions within your medical history before the treatment proceeds.

The required areas for the treatment will also be confirmed before any steps are taken, with underarms, feet and hand treatments being available.

The starting price for the hyperhidrosis treatment is £350, pricing will be discussed with you through your consultation as we work with you to get you the best results.

Step 2:
During Your Treatment

Taking place in one of our treatment rooms here in Newcastle-under-Lyme, your aesthetic practitioners will talk you through the treatment once more before beginning. As a simple treatment, a nerve-relaxing solution is injected into the intra-dermal tissue of the affected areas that stops activating sweat glands which produce sweat.

The full treatment takes around 45 minutes with little to no recovery time.

Step 3:
After The Treatment

After your hyperhidrosis treatment has been completed, as with all injections you may experience slight discomfort, this and any pain from the injections should not last long. To ensure you are as comfortable as possible, we also advise that you avoid physical activity for 24 hours.

The results of the treatment tend to last between 4-8 months depending on how your body metabolises the injectable substance and from that point, another appointment will be required if excessive sweating has returned.
